Goltzius' sketches for Muller's Seven Days of Creation and Matham's Four Elements

Goltzius' sketches for Muller's Seven Days of Creation and Matham's Four Elements 174 H.E.C. MAZUR Goltzius' sketches for Muller's Seven Days of Creation and Matham's Four Elements Eight sketches in brown ink, all attributed to Hendrik Goltzius and now all in the Leyden Printroom, have been linked with a series of seven circular prints (B I I I, 2 j8, 3 5 - j 5 ) , engraved by Jan Muller in 1589 and depicting the story of the creation (Gen. I: i - 2'7) .' None of Golzius' final drawings for Muller's Creation series is known to have survived. Five of these eight designs were formerly in the Reitlinger collection (PK 58o i - PK 5805); there can be no doubt about their connection with the Muller series, because of the general similarity they show with the prints.2 The three other drawings were previously in the Welcker collection (AW i o 1 3 - AW i o i j ) . 3 Of those one (AW i o i 4 - The First Day oj'Creation) corresponds to the finally executed print, but the evidence for a relation between the two remaining sketches and the series is much more tenuous. They are both thought to be related to Muller's third http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Oud Holland - Quarterly for Dutch Art History Brill
