ERIK BIELEN Contribution to the biography of Hendrick De Somer (1602-after 1655) : A seventeenth-century Neapolitan painter from Lokeren Hendrick de Somer (Enrico Fiammingo) is recorded as a painter from the Southern Netherlands who lived and worked in Naples between 1622 and 1655. The frequent references to De Somer’s work in estate inventories from the seventeenth and early eighteenth century indicate that he had been reasonably successful at a time when there was a very competitive local market. The surviving paintings – eight signed and dated works – reveal a painter who succeeded in mastering the style and subjects that were becoming popular in Naples at that time. He associated mainly with the originally Spanish painter Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652), who was also working there. He became apprenticed to him and received commissions through him. De Somer successfully integrated into Neapolitan society, to an extent compelled to do so because there was really no network of fellow countrymen who also painted in Naples. Hendrick de Somer came from Lokeren. Recent research in the town’s archives has brought to light a number of hitherto unknown documents which show that he was baptised in Lokeren on 27 August 1602.
