Art historians, and, in the first place, Dr. Friedlander, have held the opinion that Herry de Patenier and Henri Bles were one and the same person, basing this belief mainly upon the study of the portrait of Henri Bles, engraved by Wiericx, which they date according to the costume and the fashion of the beard, about 1550. In the portrait Bles appears to be about 40 years of age, and they have therefore given 1510 as the probable year of his birth. Having come upon, in the Museen Arch6ologique de Namur, the old painting of the collection Henri Perpete, of Dinant, authentically signed with the owl and the date 1511, we are in a position to prove that Bles could not have been born in 1510, but at least 20 years previously.
