He is rather well known, however, to collectors and specialists for his interior genre scenes with small figures, of which examples regularly appear on the art market, as well as for the portraits and the few still lifes he produced.' In this article, I would like to focus on a number of paintings of larger figures by Olis, most of which either emerged during the past decade, or were recently recognised as his work. Jan Olis was born in Gorinchem, at an unknown date, around 16lo.2 His earliest known dated work is an Interior with card players from IG29 (fig.l).3 In 1631, he reportedly signed a mythological scene, formerly in a German private collection, adding 'Roma' to the signature and date.4 This would suggest that he travelled to Italy, but there is no firm evidence that he actually undertook such a journey.
