Book Review Notice Peter Walter, Theologie aus dem Geist der Rhetorik: Zur Schriftauslegung des Erasmus von Rotterdam. Tübinger Studien zur Theologie und Philosophie, volume 1 (Mainz: Matthias Grünewald Verlag, 1991), vi, 313 pp. In addition to an introduction ("The Hermeneutics of Erasmus as a Prob- lem," 1-11) and a summary of his findings (251-261), the author presents five chapters. In chapter 1 (12-31) he analyzes the frame of Erasmus' hermeneutics (Erasmus and humanism, Erasmus as a theologian, and the humanistic back- ground of Erasmus' hermeneutics) and in chapter 2 (32-95) he deals with the basic elements of Erasmus' hermeneutics (accommodare as a rhetorical and a theological principle, Christ-centeredness of Scripture, man as the addressee, the historical quality of communication). Chapter 3 (96-152) discusses the presuppositions of Erasmus' biblical interpretation and chapter 4 (153-200) identifies the hermeneutical rules of Erasmus' biblical interpretation. Finally, in chapter 5 (201-250) Walter develops Erasmus' position on allegory and the different meanings of Scripture.
