Literary and Educational Writings 7 (De Virtute, Oratio Funebris, Encomium Medicinae, De Puero, Tyrannicida, Ovid, Pruden- tius, Galen, and Lingua), ed. by Elaine Fantham and Erika Rummel (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1989), 1, 546 pp. This last volume of seven in the Literary and Educational series includes a diverse group of pieces that embraces Erasmus' work as a translator, as mentor to the young, and as a polemicist. The volume's introduction, by editors Erika Rummel and Elaine Fantham, informs us that its contents are meant to illustrate three stages of Erasmus' assimilation of the ancient tradition: first, the accumulation and evaluation of sources (translations from Galen and commentaries on Ovid and Prudentius); second, the use of source material as illustrations in a particular context (The Tongue) ; and finally, the complete assimilation of sources into a form that the author makes his own (pp. ix-x). This explanation not only brings a kind of order to the selections in the .. volume, but it also serves to justify the inclusion of Rummel's English ren- dition of Erasmus' translations from Galen, along with the fact that the essays themselves ("Exhortation to
