Book Review Notice [ 169 ] Book Review Notice Margaret Mann Phillips. Erasmus on His Times: A Shortened Version of the "Adages" of Erasmus. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1967; reissued 1980. xx + 172 pp. In 1964 Cambridge University Press published Margaret Mann Phillips' The "Adages" of Erasmus: A Study with Translations. In 1967 the translations were reissued, with five added pages of "Reminiscences" selected from the i S 3 3 edition, and an introduction based on the earlier one plus excerpts from the opening and concluding chapters in Phil- lips' excellent study of the proverbs. The 1980 reprint makes available again her admirable versions of "all the long topical essays" (p. xix), supplemented by shorter items, that render the Adagiorum Chiliades so illuminating a commentary on their author's times. Principal among Erasmus' concerns in these longer selections are the abuses of wealth and power, the obscurantism and venality of many of the clergy, and the folly of contemporary warfare.
