© Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2008 EJJS 1.2 CONFERENCE REPORT Contemporary Jewish Writers in Italy: A Generational Approach Utrecht University—Italian Cultural Institute, Amsterdam 5–7 October 2006 Thanks to the enthusiastic involvement of two lecturers in Italian Studies at Utrecht University, Monica Jansen and Reinier (Raniero) Speelman, the Italian Cultural Institute in Amsterdam hosted the international conference “Contemporary Jewish Writers in Italy: a Generational Approach.” Papers were given by twenty- fi ve Italian Studies schol- ars from countries in Europe (Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Poland) and outside Europe (the United States, Canada, Australia). Particularly welcome was the participation of younger scholars and postgraduate students, who contributed new, sometimes unconven- tional theoretical approaches. The keynote speakers were, beside the well-known Dutch scholar Elrud Ibsch (Emerita Professor of Literature at Amsterdam University), four writers: Elena Loewenthal, Giorgio Pressburger, Miro Silvera, and Roberto Vigevani. What made this conference innovative in the context of previous international conferences focusing on Italian Jewish culture and lit- erature 1 was its generational approach. This is to be understood metaphorically rather than strictly chronologically: the focus is on the way the “canon” (Svevo, Bassani, Ginzburg, and Primo Levi) is chang- ing as a consequence of the
