John’s vision of the book with seven seals (Rev. 5,1-8,1) was interpreted in two ways in Christian antiquity and the middle ages: the seven seals were connected either with the opera by which Christ had redeemed humanity, or with periods of the history of salvation. Joachim of Fiore (d. 1202) adhered to the latter approach and carried the sacred-historical interpretation of the vision to an extreme. Th e seven seals ( sigilla ) and their respective openings ( apertiones ), in his interpretation, each symbolise a period of sacred history. Th e fi rst group of seven to be named refer to the chief tribulations that beset the Jewish people, the second seven to those that had befallen Christians or were still in store for them.
