Albrecht Beutel, a professor of Church History at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster , has written a clever, clearly structured and informative overview of a crucial period in German church history. Because of the author’s generosity in summing up the most recent literature at the beginning of each paragraph, and because of a multi- plicity of cross-references, this is a very rich and useful book. Generally, the develop- ments it describes are put in a broader context as well. Oddly enough, in spite of all these merits Beutel’s book bears a really unassuming title. Its modesty is brought out in full relief by the comparison to Klaus Scholder’s famous essay written some forty years ago (‘Grundzüge der theologischen Aufklärung in Deutschland,’ in Geist und Geschichte der Reformation. Festgabe Hanns Rückert , ed. H. Liebing and K. Scholder (Berlin, 1966), 460-86). Significantly, Beutel omits the use of the definite article.
