Objective Biblical Truth Versus the Value of Various Viewpoints: a False Dichotomy 25 OBJECTIVE BIBLICAL TRUTH VERSUS THE VALUE OF VARIOUS VIEWPOINTS: A FALSE DICHOTOMY Alice Ogden Bellis Washington, DC Several prominent biblical interpreters have commented in the last few years on the ethics of biblical hermeneutics. In 1987 Danna Nolan Fewell wrote an article entitled "Feminist Reading of the Hebrew Bible: Affirmation, Resistance and Transformation." She began her essay, "The purely objective reader is, of course, an illusion."I Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza in her 1988 presidential address to the Society of Biblical Literature said, "Biblical interpretation, like all scholarly inquiry, is a communicative practice that involves interests, values, and visions."2 In 1991 Walter Brueggemann in his presidential address to the SBL wrote, "It is possible that we would be the generation that withholds the text from our contemporary world in the interest of objectivity and in the name of our privileged neutrality. 113 These quotations represent one emerging consensus that objectivi- ty is impossible and even dangerous. In addition, those who hold this view oppose themselves to scholars who value both objectivity and professional neutrality. Two separate issues are intertwined here. One is the possibility and value of objectivity. The other is the possibility and value of neutrality.
