The Problem of Biblical Theology 83 The Problem of Biblical Theology Petr Pokorny Prague, Czech Republic 1 From the history of Biblical Theology ' Before we discuss the topical problems of Biblical Theology, let me mention some facts from the history of this field of theological research, which are necessary for understanding the present situation. 1.1 The beginnings For centuries Christian doctrine (the dogmatic tradition) was con- sidered to be the best summary of biblical teaching. It was only two hundred years ago when Johann Ph. Gabler (1753-1826) initiated the Biblical Theology as a special discipline and as a critical counter- part of dogmatics. According to him Biblical Theology should re- discover the 'historical meaning of the Bible.'1 He and other scholars of similar orientation (e.g. Georg L.Bauer) were convinced that God revealed himself in nature and in history as a cosmic soul, which even- tually concentrated in Jesus Christ, so that in their view Biblical The- ology was almost identical with a philosophy of history.2 2 1.2 The project of the History of Salvation The other theological tradition which could be considered a predecessor of the contemporary projects of Biblical Theology as a survey of biblical teaching is the concept of History http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Horizons in Biblical Theology Brill
