By Susan R. Garrett. The Anchor Yale Bible Reference Library. New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 2008. Pp. 352. $ 30.00. Susan R. Garrett’s book No Ordinary Angel is not so much a book about angels as it is a survey of modern and ancient sources’ statements about angels. In Garrett’s own words: “Attending to talk about angels—talk in the Bible, and talk today—opens a way into seri- ous reflection on important theological questions” (p. 237). The theological questions dis- cussed are God’s presence (or absence?) in the world (chapter one), the sacred in everyday life (chapter two), desires and how to deal with them (chapter three), the problem of evil (chapters four and five) and death (chapter six). Garrett builds the discussion of these topics around different roles attributed to angels in both ancient and modern sources: the angel as messenger and sometimes agent of healing (chapter one), the angels at God’s court (chapter two), fallen angels (chapter three), Satan (chapter four), guardian angels (chapter five) http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Horizons in Biblical Theology Brill
