Book Reviews 75 BOOK REVIEWS Contours of Old Testament Theology, by Bernhard W. Anderson. Min- neapolis : Fortress Press, 1999. Pp. x + 358. $27.00 hardcover. Donald E. Gowan Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15206 This well-written book is designed to serve as a textbook in courses on biblical theology. It even includes a "Course Precis" as an appendix. Anderson speaks of the "Biblical Theology of the Old Testament," under- standing that to be a Christian enterprise, and the book concludes with two chapters which trace "paths" from the Old Testament to the New, showing how the moves from Torah to Wisdom and Prophecy to Apoca- lyptic led to the work of Jesus Christ. Briefly comparing him with other writers of Old Testament theology: He acknowledges a considerable affinity with Brevard Childs, and his emphasis on covenant reminds us of Eichrodt. Unlike Brueggemann, he refuses to "bracket our historicity," " but he makes no critical reconstruction of history as a basis for his work, as von Rad did. The book concludes with a tribute to G. Ernest Wright entitled "The Relevance of Biblical Archaeology to Biblical Theology."
