Abstract

What is the relationship between myth and science? Tito Vignoli tried to answer this question in 1879 with a volume which at the time had wide impact, not only at home but also abroad, thanks to two translations, written in German (1880) and English (1882). In brief, myth and science are two rivers flowing from the same source: expressions, although of different complexity, of the same cognitive ability. Vignoli was one of the protagonists of Italian Positivism, appreciated by such august scholars as Aby Warburg and Ernst Cassirer. However, after his death in 1914 he was soon forgotten, to some extent because of his convoluted and “metaphysical” style, for which he was reprimanded by his contemporaries, but especially due to the establishment in Italy of a historiography prioritizing the philosophy of Idealism, which allowed little space for positivist perspectives which Vignoli fully embodied. This fine book by Elena Canadelli thus fills a gap in the historiography. The author, who devoted her doctoral thesis to this little-known character, maintains an effervescent style and deft treatment of the history of ideas while making use of abundant manuscript sources found in almost forty different archives.
