Book Reviews / Iran and the Caucasus 18 (2014) 407 Chad G. Lingwood, Politics, Poetry, and Sufism in Medieval Iran: New Perspectives in Jm's Salmn va Absl, Leiden-Boston: "Brill", 2014, 280 pp. The book consists of an introduction, five chapters, conclusion, two appendixes, bibliography and index. The first chapter, Approaching Jm's Salmn va Absl as a Perso-Islamic Book of Advice for Rulers, discusses the context of Salmn va Absl, the provenance of the allegory, its historical significance, and some parallels between this poem and the Manav of Rm. Comparing the symbolic meaning of the characters in Rm's tale with those in Jm's story, the author proves that the poem was patterned particularly after Rm's tale. The second chapter, Political Advice for Rulers and Mystical Guidance for Sufis in Salmn va Absl, represents a short history of the Perso-Islamic tradition of advice and advice literature. An important part of Jm's explicit advice is the concept of justice. Speaking about the "just ruler", Jm often describes him as " nothing but God's shadow" and a refuge for mankind. The third and forth chapters, The Religious and Political Influences of Sufis at the q Qoynl courts of zn asan and Ya`qb, and Poetry at the Courth of Ya`qb and Its Background in Establishing an Historical Context for Salmn va Absl, accordingly, examine the political activities of Sufi mystics, especially the Naqshbands, at the royal court and civil administrations of zn asan and his son Ya`qb, and the late 15th century Tabriz literature, paying attention to the poets patronised by Ya`qb and his vizier Q `s Svaj. The fifth chapter, A Theosophical Interpretation of Salmn va Absl and its Relevance to its Historical Setting, is divided into several parts devoted to the comparison of Salmn va Absl and the Manav of Rm, love and the imprint of the theosophy of Ibn al-`Arab, some aspects of the visionary experience in Salmn va Absl, the symbols of Ya`qb and his court in the poem, the date of its completion, etc. Arpiné Arushanian Yerevan State University Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2014 DOI: 10.1163/1573384X 20140409-BS -
