Iran and the Caucasus 18 (2014) 405-406 Book Reviews Judith Pfeiffer (ed.), Politics, Patronage and the Transmission of Knowledge in 13th-15th Century Tabriz, Leiden-Boston: "Brill", 2014, 397pp. The aim of this book is to analyse the political, cultural, and intellectual life of Tabriz during the 13th-15th centuries. It consists of 13 articles, including lists of contributors and illustrations, Introduction, and an Index. The introduction written by the editor provides information about the study of the cultural and intellectual achievements of the Later Middle Period of Islamic History (1258-ca. 1500). She argues why the book has been focused on one specific cityTabriz, mentioning the significant and multilateral role this city played in that period. The first contribution, "Hülegü and His Wise Men: Topos or Reality?" by Reuven Amitai, presents the interactions between the first Ilkhan Hülegü and his closest entourage, as well as depicts the religious debates within the Ilkhanate at that time. "`l' al-Dawla Simnn's Religious Encounters at the Mongol Court near Tabriz" by Devin DeWeese is devoted to the life and individual religious transformation of the celebrated Sufi l' al-Dawla Simnn under the multiple religious influences, including Buddhism.
