ARMENIAN xoygofowt'iwn (Tracing Back An Old Animal-breeding Custom in Ancient Armenia) ARMENIAN xoygofowt'iwn (Tracing Back An Old Animal-breeding Custom in Ancient Armenia) GARNIK ASATRIAN Yerevan The word literally means "the stealing of rams" being a compound consisting of xoy "ram, male sheep" and golowtiwn "theft, stealing". In the whole Classic Armenian literature it is attested twice in the same text: in the Book of Chreion - Girk pitoyie` (GP), a rhetoric handbook (partly translated from Greek in the tradition of the Hellenizing school), compiled probably in the second half of the Fifth century A.D. and traditionally ascribed to Movses Khorenatsi (see Mouradian, pp. 280,288). The first attestation of this form (in gen. sg.) in a construction with zarm "progeny, descendant, son" appeared in the chapter dedicated to the negation of an episode from Greek mythology - the story of Hercules and Auge (Eic z-Erakleay.- III3.b). Hercules, when in Arcadia, has raped the daughter of the king and priestess of Athena, Auge who became pregnant and begot an illegitimate son, Telephos. Then the plot develops in the way that king Teuthras married Auge...ew z-norin xoygolowtean zarm ?agaworow?eann ?owc`anel 2atangawor (p.68), i.e "and made her son (or progeny) of xoygolowtiwn as heir apparent of the kingdom".
