The publication is supported by the Galouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon). Along with many im- portant contributions to the study of the history and culture of Arme- nia, Melik -Bax yan was also one of the creators of the voluminous en- cyclopaedic dictionary of the toponyms of the Armenian Highland (see Hayastani ev harakic r anneri te anunneri ba aran, vols. 1-5, Yerevan: “State University Press”, 1986-2001). Armenia is distinguished by its thousands of magnificent places of religious worship, memorials, churches, monasteries, and sanctuaries. Due to its being situated at the juncture of two continents and conse- quently a bridge between the East and West, Armenia has historically been populated by religious communities of various backgrounds with their own unique traditions.
