25 An historical-contextual overview of Adventist theological education in the South Pacific Islands,1800-1918 ALEX S. CURRIE The history of Christian mission has been written from vastly different perspectives. The schema of Otto Dibelius (!) divided .. church history into four divisions that follow the transmission of Christianity to new cultures.(2) Kenneth Scott Latourette wrote utilizing the major chronological divisions often used in secular histories.(3) The nineteenth century, the missions period, occupies three of his seven volumes. Bengt Sundkler adopts an ecological approach,(4) his major concern being the environment in which the church lived and interacted. This article attempts to examine the beginnings of Seventh-day Adventist theological training during its first thirty years in the.South Pacific. For contextual background, comparison and contrast the paper provides a skeleton sketch of the development of theological education among major Protestant denominations in Oceania. The paper's major objective is to provide a chronological outline of the development of Adventist theological education in the South Pacific Islands. The definition of theological education in this paper is simply the intensive and structured preparation of persons wishing to witness for God in some form of paid or unpaid ministry.
