Grand Rapids, Michigan, US, Baker Academic 2008. Pp. xxi + 390. $24.95. Th is book is the third volume in a new series of studies published by Baker Academic, the fi rst two being Introducing World Missions: A Biblical, Historical and Practical Survey (2004) and Th e Changing Face of World Missions: Engaging Contemporary Issues and Trends (2005). In a review of the fi rst I spoke of it as the most wide-ranging and inclusive introduction to missions then in print, and I have the same appreciation for this third volume on living cross-culturally. Encountering Missionary Life and Work is almost encyclopedic in its scope, taking the reader on the journey from preparation for intercultural ministry to living cross- culturally – including language acquisition and cultural adaptation – and then to some of the diffi culties and even trauma of reentry to one’s homeland.
