The Mission of God: Unlocking the Bible's Grand Narrative

The Mission of God: Unlocking the Bible's Grand Narrative Book Reviews / Mission Studies 26 (2009) 103–150 131 Th e Mission of God: Unlocking the Bible’s Grand Narrative. By Christopher J. H. Wright. Downers Grove, Illinois, US, InterVarsity Press 2006. Pp. 581. $38.00. In this hefty volume Wright, director of international ministries for Langham Partnership International ( John Stott’s ministry), sets out a biblical basis for mission. He views mission as much more than what we do. It is something beyond mere human agency and includes God’s ultimate purpose, which did not begin at Pentecost. Rather, the whole of human history provides a stage on which God’s overarching mission is being played out. Th us, reliance upon a few missional proof-texts is wholly unsatisfactory. We must focus instead on God’s entire plan, grasping a missional meta-narrative whereby the whole of the Bible sets about answering the sin of Genesis. For Wright, then, mission is the central theme which runs through the entire Bible. Th e book consists of four parts. In the fi rst Wright discusses why a missional hermeneu- tic is central to understanding the Bible, while parts 2–4 set about explaining how by exploring the implications for God, people, and the arena of mission.
