Money and Banking in Egypt, 24-25 March 1986 MEED Conferences 465 Money and Banking in Egypt, 24-25 March 1986 MEED Conferences Egypt has the enviable position in the Arab world of a large population and a market-based economic infra-structure. However, the disadvantages of a large population are only too clear when considered alongside land available for industrial and agricultural use, and so it is very important for observers of the Middle East to assess carefully the financial and commercial implications of dealing with and in Egypt. Quite apart from Egypt's role in the Middle East because of her cultural and political background, the very market that is now available in Egypt herself means that instead of seeing Egypt solely as a catalyst in cultural and legal matters for the rest of the Middle East, the country has to be assessed as a unit quite on its own. This Conference, clearly organised to co-ordinate with the other MEED Conference on Law in Egypt, contained various interesting papers by eminent persons. The Prime Minister, Dr Aly Lotfi, introduced the proceedings with a concise and optimistic discussion of the real situation in Egypt, expressing candidly his views both as to the positive and less positive aspects of the Egyptian economy. Abstract

465 Money and Banking in Egypt, 24-25 March 1986 MEED Conferences Egypt has the enviable position in the Arab world of a large population and a market-based economic infra-structure.
