This book consists mainly of Fiedler's 1976 PhD thesis (University of Dar es Salaam, dpt. of History), which was first published in 1983 in a revised German translation (Christentum und afrikanische Kultur; konservative deutsche Missionare in Tanzania 1900-1940; Gütersloh: Giitersloher Ver- lagshaus Mohn). The remaining 37 pages are two chapters written by Robin Lamburn in the 1930s on traditional, resp. christianized rites in the life of the Yao of Southern Tanzania (previously published in Noel King and Klaus Fiedler with Gavin White (eds.), Robin Lamburn - From a Missionary's Notebook: The Yao of Tunduru and other Essays; Saar- br6cken/Fort Lauderdale: Breitenbach 1991). The point of comparison between Fiedler's German (Lutheran and Moravian) missionaries and the Anglicans working among the Yao, notably their Bishop Vincent Lucas, lies in the latter's positive appreci- ation of African culture and their attempts to give it a place in the African Church they were building.
