Risto Ahonen is Adjunct Professor of Missiology at the University of Helsinki and Th eo- logical Consultant of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission, an organisation with 240 Finnish missionary workers in 20 countries all over the world. Th e book was originally published in Finnish in 2000 under the title Lähetys uudella vuosituhannella. Th rough the publication of this English edition the Mission Department of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church gives evidence of its interest in theological refl ection and its intention to participate in the worldwide ecumenical discussion on the missionary task of the church. Ahonen examines the question how the missionary task of the church should be formu- lated at the beginning of the new millennium. One century after the fi rst World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh 1910 the missionary scene has been drastically changed. Th e gravity of Christianity has shifted towards the southern hemisphere.
