POETRY BY SHRINIVASI IN CONTEXT: THE ENCOUNTER OF POPULAR AND OFFICIAL HINDUISM AND CHRISTIANITY IN SURINAM Karel Steenbrink & Joop Vernooij Some countries in the Caribbean show an extremely rich variety of religions. The most diversified nations in this respect are probably Trinidad (some 45% Christians 30% Hindus and 14% Muslims, with 4.6% Adventists and 4.3% Jehovah's as strong minorities), Guyana (37% Hindus, 29% Christians and 9% Muslims) and Surinam (40% Christians, 30% Hindus and 20% Muslims).' In these figures the traditional religions of American, Indian and African origin have disappeared, because they are not included in the official statistics. In every day life, however, popular religion within the formal or official religions can be considered as the heirs to traditional religions. How do they interact? This contribu- tion wants to confront the levels of popular and official religion in their encounters in Surinam. We will see, that the informal and formal encoun- ters are very different, but can be seen as complementary. 1.
