Butler (ed.)* Th e bibliography edited by William Elliot Butler records important in- formation about two fi elds of law in a great country over a long period, namely public international law and private international law in Russia before 1917. Th e titles compiled in the bibliography amount to about 3250 in number. Th e total number of authors mentioned is about 850. Among them are pro- lifi c writers on international law such as Leonid Alekseevich Kamarovskii (1846-1912) with 177 entries. Th e number of authors with fi ve or more catalogued articles and books, not counting book reviews, is about 120, making evident the size of the core group of persons who published on international law in pre-revolutionary Russia. Th e period of scholarly publishing on public international law in Tsar- ist Russia seems to have embraced exactly 200 years. Th e monograph by Petr Pavlovich Shafi rov (1669-1739) entitled in the compiler’s translation Discourse of legal reasons of His Tsarist Majesty … on the beginning of war against King Charles XII of Sweden …
