Bu t the discussion of the past is no longer merely a discussion of what happened wh en; it is more and m ore a reflection on how we live with our resp ective pasts, how we conceptualize the past and how we give meaning to it. Th at is why research on historiography and historical thought i s no longer confined to a small group of specialists; it has become a major concern of t he community of professional historians as well as of th e interested public. As everything and everybody in this world i s part o f a process, which is commonly called globalization, so is the writing of hist ory. While other fields of i ntellectual creativity have long been internationalized, the writing of history is confronted wi th a special load o f d ifficulties w hen trying to r eact to the challenge of g lobalization.
