SOME ERRORS IN THE LEGATIO OF ATHENAGORAS BY ROBERT M. GRANT As in the case of most early Christian apologies, the Legatio of Athenagoras has been transmitted to us through one manuscript. Here it is the Arethas Codex of the year 914 (Cod. Paris. gr. 451, f. 322"-348'). The most conspicuous error in it occurs from f. 326v, to 327"1, where a passage later correctly placed at f. 330'-a has been inserted in the middle of a sentence. A striking example of a gloss which has slipped into the text is found in f. 334" (Leg. 18, 6 Ubaldi- Pellegrino), where an Orpliic line is cited as ojvsxa tctc,uu???jQCOorcv i§ zc,u?jQCaacvoaQ??v. What has happened, as Stephanus noted, is that an explanation (half right, half wrong) of zcQaQ??v has been inserted between the first and the second syllables of the word. This fact encourages us to agree with the various editors who have suspected the existence of other glosses in Leg. 14, 1 (p. 64b Otto, n. 10 : xai 'Hal'obog M?jBecav ? Nt' ofl 2?v), 17, 4 (p. 80a-b Otto, n. 27: mat' 45etbt'ov 1'à Aot7til and 20, 2 (pp. 92b-93a Otto, n. 7 : dr?,u?jzo?os With Diels
