This recent doctoral dissertation, supervised by Simon Gathercole at Cambridge, offers a careful analysis of the relationship between John’s gospel and a number of noncanonical gospels. Zelyck (Z.) finds in the latter varying degrees of influence of John’s gospel but no evidence for pre-Johannine sources. The scope is broad for an academic thesis: eleven noncanonical texts, including Coptic gospels from the Nag Hammadi Library and Greek fragments of unknown gospels, are discussed. Each text is explored on its own, all relevant points of comparison are listed, and previous research is well documented. Z. defines “a gospel” as “a work that claims to give direct reports of the life and/or teachings of Jesus, and is primarily written from the third person perspective” (5-6). While all other texts analyzed in this book offer a good fit with this definition, the Gospel of Philip is the odd one out; the arguments by which Z. supports its inclusion in the sayings gospel genre (7-8) hardly carry conviction.
