The Leiden engraver Frans van Bleyswyck (1671-1746)

The Leiden engraver Frans van Bleyswyck (1671-1746) JEAN C. STRENG The Leiden engraver Frans van Bleyswyck (1671-1746)* Van Bleyswyck was christened in the Hoogland Church, Leiden, on 24 May 1671.? It was the occasion for him to receive the Christian name of Frans. Frans was the son of Pieter van Bleyswyck and his wife Trijntje Fransdochter. He was therefore probably called Frans after his maternal grandfather, Frans Jacobszoon. A brother of Frans was called Cornelis. A Johannes and an Elizabeth must also be reckoned among the members of the family, for on 10 January 1717 Frans and an Elizabeth Bleiswijk are recorded as godfather and godmother at the christening of a child of Johannes van Bleiswijk. Perhaps Johannes and Elizabeth were a brother and sister of Frans. The precise relationship between them is however still not quite clear. Nor do we know father Pieter's profession. And we are equally in the dark about what Frans had been doing between his birth and the moment of his reappearance in the Leiden archives.
