Book reviews Book reviews Liber amicorum Herman Liebaers. Frans Vanwijngaerden, Jean-Marie Duvosquel, Josette Mélard, Lieve Viaene-Awouters ediderunt. Bruxellis 1984, 24 x 16 cm, xlvi + 626 pp., illus., FB 1500. This festschrift came into being to mark the 65th birthday in 1984 of Herman Liebaers, Director of the Royal Library Albert I in Brussels from 1956 until 1973, Grand Marshal of the Court from 1974 until 1981, and thereafter Royal Commis- sioner for the Restructuring of the National Research Institutions, etc. etc. There is no need in Quaerendo's columns to stress Liebaers's significance for the library world and the domains of manuscripts and printed books. In his revealing and sym- pathetic introductory essay 'A Portrait' (pp. xv-xxxix) Clark Stillman, a colleague and friend for about 35 years, defines Liebaers's three most striking features as (1) his prodigious energy, (2) his deep interest in people, and (3) his organizing ability. In addition, he pronounces him to be both a man of his country-Belgium-and a man of the world. One can wholeheartedly concur with Stillman's words, and if ever a man deserved to be honoured with a festschrift it is surely this 'universal man' Herman Liebaers.
