Notes and news Notes and news UTRECHT UNIVERSITY LIBRARY FOUR HUNDRED YEARS OLD In 1581 the city fathers of Utrecht passed a resolution to confiscate the books owned by the five chapters and the monasteries in and around the city and to bring them together in a library to be accessible to the whole citizenry. Understandably, the monks and canons of Utrecht did not rush to put this resolution into effect, so that it was not until about 14 February 1584 that the city fathers were actually able to establish a city library in the choir of St. John's church, which had been made available to them for the purpose. At first the collection consisted of some 600 volumes containing both manuscripts and printed works and originating from the most important monastery libraries together with some from the library of the chapter of St. John's. The other chapters refused all co-operation and sent their books underground. It was not until the nineteenth century that some of them final- ly made their way into the university library.
