Father Wilhelm Schmidt, the instigator and leading figure of the . so-called Anthropos or Vienna School of anthropology, linguistics and comparative religion, exerted a great influence over these disciplines from about 1910 until his death in 1954. It could be said that the school he created ceased to exist with his own death. However, many of the ideas he produced in his prolific writings have left a lasting imprint on history of religions. In particular is this the case with his works on the original ideas of God in "primitive" cultures. The message of his monumental magnum opus, Der Ursprung der Gottesidee (12 volumes, 1912-1955), that the most primitive peoples on earth represent the oldest traditions of a "pure" belief in an ethical, heavenly Supreme Being, is still the ac- cepted scientific truth in many quarters. It is against this background that Dr. Pajak's book should be seen.
