CHRISTIAN IDENTITY IN TIMES OF POLITICAL CRISIS: RELATIONS BETWEEN CHURCHES IN AFRICA AND EUROPE IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY REPORT ON AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AT MAKUMIRA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, TANZANIA  KEVIN WARD (University of Leeds) This meeting was planned as a follow-up to the conference on the History of Christianity in the Non-Western World, held in Munich- Freising in 2004, with the theme of ‘African Identities and World Christianity’. The second Conference was organised by Professor Jens Holger Schjorring of the University of Aarhus in Denmark, in collab- oration with Professor Klaus Koschorke of Munich. It met between 8 and 12 October 2005, at Makumira in Northern Tanzania, bringing together a group of some twenty- fi ve historians working on African Christianity. The majority were Africans pursuing their research within an African context, in African universities or in seminaries. There was a small number of scholars from Europe, mainly from Scandinavia. Our hosts were the Provost of Makumira, Professor Mwakagali, and his sta ff .
