Abd Al-Hakïm Qasim and the Search for Liberation � ABD AL-HAKÏM QASIM AND THE SEARCH FOR LIBERATION Life in Egypt has become asphyxiating in recent years. This is not because of the pollution of Cairo's atmosphere which strikes the casual visitor, but because of the situation of oppression, hopelessness and insecurity in many domains-economic, political, existential and societal-which has been the lot of most Egyptians since the sixties. It is all the more noteworthy that writers who have explored the period, witnesses to the end of the world, as they have been called,' have used such a variety of approaches in their work, and have chosen to concen- trate on such widely differing aspects of it. This individuality is in fact an indication of a defiant inner freedom. In this essay I will examine the contribution to the exploration of Egypt's predicament of cabd al-Hakim Qasim, a prominent member of the generation of writers who made their d6but in the 1960s. Qasim has received less attention than some other members of this "generation of witnesses", in particular Suncalldh Ibrahim and Jamal al-Ghitani, but, as I shall try to show, his voice is a unique contribution to the polyphony of modern Egyptian fiction.
