Third, it is not a reflective or pro- found book, covering much too much ground in a superficial manner, so teachers will not be aided by the book in presenting the subject. It is one- dimensional ; orthodoxy exacts costs, and Modern Orthodoxy imposes a heavy tariff of intellectual sloth. That is a pity, since SCHIFFMAN is a fine scholar in a few of the many areas on which he passes his opinion in these pages, and he could have given us a work of intellectual vitality and topical interest.
