186 REVIEW OF BOOKS Franz J. BAUTZ (Herausgeber) Geschichte der Juden. Von der biblischen Zeit bis zur Gegenwart (Beck'sche Schwarze Reihe 268), Verlag C. H. Beck, München 1983, 247 pp., paper, DM 22,-. This is the publication of a number of talks given on the Bavarian Broadcast in the autumn of 1980. It contains the following contributions: 9-26 R. RENDTORFF, Der Gott der Bibel (religious history of Israel until the capture of Jerusalem); 27-53 Sh. TALt?.toN, Exil und Ruckkehr; 54-76 P. SCHÄFER,Juden, Griechen, Rdmer(300 B.C.-600 A.D. ; mainly in Palestine); 77-95 P. NAVK, Kirche und Synagoge (up to modern times; a rather rambling expos6); 96-114 A. MORABIA, Die Begegnung derJuden mit der Welt des Islam; 115-139 M. RIFF, Das osteuropdzsche Judentum; 140-164 W. GRAB, Der preussische-dmische Weg der Judenemanzipation; 165-183 H. GREIVE, Antisemitismus, Zionismus und Staat Israel; 184-227 J. THORNWALD-H. H. HOLZ, Die Juden in Amerika. A time-table composed by P. SCHÄFER, thir- teen maps and some information about the authors complete the book. There are no footnotes nor a bibliography. On the whole this is a readable and ably done representation. Of course, space permitted only a bird's-eye view of the immense subject-matter. Besides, the plurality of authors made gaps inevitable. Serious omissions for the period covered by our Journal include silence on such items as the early history of the synagogue, the making of rabbinic literature, and the gradual growth of the diaspora in Roman times and after. Thus the publisher's claim on the back cover to offer a "survey of the quadrimillen- nial history of the Jews" has something of an overstatement. A. An investigation into the meaning of (with a summary in English), Diss. Utrecht 1982, 343 pp., paper (copies obtainable from the author: Heidelberglaan 2, Transitorium II, Utrecht, Netherlands). In this theological doctoral thesis prepared under the direction of the late W. C. VAN UNNIK and completed under the direction of his successor J. REILING, an investigation is made into the concept of "alienship" in Philo. In its six chapters the following subjects are treated: I. Philo's method, state of Philonic research, plan of the present work; II. Alienship in the LXX and in Philo (an exploration of the terminology used); III. 1tápmxoç designating the relationship of man to God; IV. 1tOtPO\Xtw designating the engagement in the study of the artes liberales as a prepara- tion for the knowledge of God; V. 1tápmxoç designating the attitude of the wise man towards the earthly existence; VI.
