55 REVIEW OF BOOKS Elias BICKERMAN, The God of the Maccabees. Studies on the Meaning and Origin of the Maccabean Revolt, translated by Horst R. MOEHRING (Studies in Judaism in Late Antiquity 32), Brill, Leiden 1979, xiii and 122 pp., cloth f 48.-. Elias BICKERMANN'S famous monograph Der Gott der Makkabder was published by Schocken VerIag-Judischer Verlag in Berlin in 1937. The author's contention that Epiphanes' intervention in the religious affairs of Jerusalem and Judea was inspired by Jewish reformers, has not failed to influence the ensuing discussion on the meaning and origin of the Macca- bean revolt till the present day. Although an increasing number of scholars subscribes to BtCKERMANN'S interpretation, amongst them HENGEL, others have remained sceptic or have proposed counter-theses (amongst them TCHERIKOVER, STERN, and BUNGE). Because BICKERMANN'S book has been out-of-print since the tragic period of the Nazi regime, many will warmly applaud the present transla- tion, initiated by Jacob NEUSNER. Professor MOEHRING'S rendering is faithful to the original text but he dropped, at the author's request, the footnotes or incorporated them, in some cases, into the text.
