The reason that this homily is not mentioned in B6HL'S study is un- doubtedly the fact that it lacks the Yelammedenu formula. Its opening phrase is not "Let our Rabbi teach us" or "If an Israelite ... ", but, in Aramaic, "This question was asked before R. Tanhum of Nawe: what about extinguishing a lamp for the sake of a sick person on the Sabbath?" But except for the absense of the formula proper, there is as yet no material reason not to regard this homily as one of the Yelammedenu type. This brings us to our second remark. It appears that the sole criterion for the selection of the Midrashic material in this study is the occurrence of the Yelammedenu formula in one of its recognized forms. The formula itself is not treated as part of the material under study (apart from the intro- ductory chapter on its origin), and deviations from the accepted 'classical' forms, let alone absence of the formula, are apparently not acknowledged. The result is that all other homilies, however similar their structure and content, are
