Abstract

233 Galilea. This last point, so controversial, is treated extensively (pp. 67-96); E.Y.K. concludes that for the most part in Galilea, and probably in the rest of Palestine as well, the inhabitants were capable of pronouncing the gutturals properly. This problem which E.Y.K. believed was solved should now be reinvestigated in light of MS. Neophyti 1 (strangely E.Y.K. never studied profoundly the text of Neophyti 1). According to the data of this Palestinian Targum, there is confusion between alef-a y in, pet-he and pet-cryin; this has been proved by A. DÍEZ MACHO in "The Recently Dis- covered Palestinian Targum: its Antiquity and Relationship with the Other Targums, hT Supp VII, Leiden 1960, p. 241. This study is valuable both for the well based affirmations, supported by sufficient examples, and also for the basic methodology for the further study of Galilean Aramaic. But all these statements have to be corroborated, corrected or revised today according to the material which has appeared in the critical edition of MS. Neophyti 1, the complete Palestinian Targum to the Pentateuch in Galilean Aramaic. In this respect the proposals of E.Y.K. have been repeatedly analysed and criticized by A.
