Paolo SACCHI, Storia del mondo giudaico (Manuali universitari), Società editrice internazionale, Torino 1976, XVI and 327 pp., cloth lire 10.000 (This interesting work is a survey of the history and religion of the Jewish world from the Babylonian exile until the period of nascent Christianity. After an introduction the first two parts of the book deal with the history of Judaism before the Seleucid period and the events from the Maccabean upraisal till the destruction of Jerusalem. The author's main concern, how- ever, is with the themes of pre-Christian Jewish thought which are presented in the comprehensive third part of the work (p. 147-269, dealing with themes such as Knowledge as Illumination, Predestination, Redemption, Messianism, the Righteous, Immortality and Resurrection, Sacred and Profane, Pure and Impure, Calendar). Although this book is meant for a larger public and seems to meet the requirements of university students, specialists will surely profit from this study as well. The author's reappraisal of the dominant themes prevailing in the intertestamental period is marked by a cautious approach to the variegated views, interests and insights of the different religious move- ments of the period. Due account has been given to the Dead Sea Scrolls and the theology of the community responsible for them. The book is an excellent and reliable introduction to the history and religion of early Judaism, especially to the religious background of the NT). m' V. D. W. P. Untersuchungen zur rabbinischen Engelvorstellung (Studia Judaica VIII), Walter de Gruy- ter, Berlin/New York 1975, XIV und 280 S., ganzleinen DM 78.- (Die geringfügig überarbeitete Habilitationsschrift von S. bietet nach einer Bewertung der bislang zum Thema veröffentlichten Literatur und einem Überblick iiber die nachexilischen Engelvorstellungen in den Apokryphen, Pseudepigraphen, den Qumranschriften und der rabbinischen Literatur, in ihrem Hauptteil (II) eine Einzelinterpretation von 74 Texten, die sich in irgendeiner Weise mit jenem merkwürdigen Thema der rabbinischen Literatur, der Rivalität zwischen Engeln und Menschen, befassen. Bei dieser Textinterpretation wird jeweils zunachst der einzelne Text in all seinen vorhandenen Versionen in deutscher l7bersetzung dargeboten und danach in der Weise interpretiert, dass die Versionen miteinander ver- glichen werden, jede Version im Kontext gedeutet und der Ertrag des Textes fiir das Thema der Untersuchung festgestellt wird. Diesem S. 75- 218 umfassenden Hauptteil folgen eine Zusammenfassung der Ergebnisse, ein Quellen- und Literaturverzeichnis und Register.
