Texte der Schriftrollen und Lebensbild der Gemeinde (Uni-Taschenbücher 224), Ernst Reinhardt Verlag, München/Basel 1973, 315 pp. (As stated in the preface of the publication, this book, judged by the discussions regarding the l?ead Sea Scrolls and more particularly regarding the question of the originality of Christ and Christianity, aims at providing the general reader with a handy publication of the Qumran texts together with an essay which might enable him to understand their meaning and significance. In the first part of the volume SCHUBERT describes the Qumran discoveries, the history of the Qumran community and its theology, while MAIER in the second part offers transla- tions of the principal texts from cave 1 (with the exception of the biblical scrolls), the Damascus Document and a number of fragments from cave 4. Apart from a few introducing words to SCHUBERT'S discussion of the texts and the enlarged concise bibliography at the end of the book, the present publication seems to be nothing more than a reprint of K. SCHUBERT, Die Gemeinde vom Toten Meer, 1958 and J. MAIER, Die Texte vom Toten Meer, Band I, 1960, so much so that even the printer's errors are retained (e.g., p. 17 Habukuk instead of Habakuk). This state of affairs inevitably results in obsolete and inadequate information. So e.g. it is said (p. 15) that two copper scrolls were found in cave 3 which were opened in 1956, but are not yet published. These scrolls, however, were edited by MILIK as early as 1959 in Revue Biblique and in 1960 in the Annual of the Department of Antiquitie.r of Jordan (comp. also the diplomatic edition in DJD III). Texts edited since 1960 are neither mentioned in SCHUBERT'S survey nor translated in MmER's contribution. One wonders how scholars of international reputation like SCHUBERT and MAIER could approve the re-edition of their works without them being brought up-to-date and without mentioning the fact that the present book is substantially nothing but a reprint of their earlier publications).
