Th is volume by three well-known experts is a welcome addition to the burgeoning literature on the topic of the ancient synagogue. Olsson directed a research project on ancient synagogues at Lund University in Sweden, between 1997 and 2001, that became the genesis of this book. His coauthors, Runesson and Binder, both have written important monographs on the ancient synagogue that integrate archaeological remains with the literary evidence. Th e three have joined forces to produce the fi rst comprehensive compendium of archaeological and textual sources on the ancient synagogue from its origins to 200 C.E. Th is volume is divided into fi ve major parts. Th e introduction examines current scholarship on synagogues, and explains the organization of the book. Parts two and three, which make up most of the volume, examine archaeological remains and literary sources from the
