In the larger framework of the book this chapter forms a background confi rming at least the fact that ancient views on translating were more diverse than is often suggested and that many aspects of language and translating were already refl ected upon. Because we have no such philosophical or methodological refl ections on language and translating by the Septuagint translators—excluding the grandson of Ben Sira in his preface to his Greek translation—we have to become familiar with
