W. van der Louw. (Contributions to Biblical Exe- gesis & Th eology 47). Leuven, Paris and Dudley: Peeters, 2007. Pp. xiv, 403. Paperback. €42.00. 978-90-429-1888-7. Th e main aim of the book is to show the usefulness of translation studies for the study of the Septuagint. He discusses fi rst the historical translation studies (chapter 2). What follows is a rather detailed analysis of opinions on translating and language in the Greek world and in Rome. Bilingual texts and Jewish views on language and translation are also included. In the larger framework of the book this chapter forms a background confi rming at least the fact that ancient views on translating were more diverse than is often suggested and that many aspects of language and translating were already refl ected upon. Because we have no such philosophical or methodological refl ections on language and translating by the Septuagint translators—excluding the grandson of Ben Sira in his preface to his Greek translation—we have to become familiar with
