Whether because we are astute or because we are jealous, it is quite usual for us to think that successful rulers are self-centered, that those of them who build cities and huge buildings are megalomaniacs, that they do so not in response to real needs but due to inferiority complexes of which we enjoy explaining the etiology, and that those of them who move energetically and ruthlessly against perceived enemies are paranoid and sadistic. But most of us make no claim, neither in our grousing about contemporary figures nor in our work as historians of earlier peri- ods, to use these psychological formulations with any scientific rigor. Th at is what is special about the present contribution to the recent flood of Herod books.
