BOOK REVIEWS BOOK REVIEWS Roebbens, Bert & Warren, Michael (eds) (2001). Religious education as practical the- ology: Essays in honour of Professor Herman Lombaerts. Leuven: Peeters. ISBN 90 429 1032 1. C = 50 . Reviewed by Jeff Astley, Durham, UK This volume brings together an international group of thirteen scholars (including four from the USA and two from Australia) to honour the Belgian religious educationalist Herman Lombaerts. The book begins and ends with pieces by Rosemary Crumlin and Lombaerts himself that include re ections on striking pieces of modern religious art (illustrated in the vol- ume), but the body of the text comprises a group of essays focused on key issues in the theory, empirical base and contemporary practice of religious education, with two others centred on theological education. The empirical studies include Anton Bucher’s interesting data on children’s happiness and his re ections on their implications for religious pedagogy. Hans-George Ziebertz complements these studies with a persuasive plea for the importance of an empirical research orientation for practical theology in general, and research in religious education in particular. The concept of identity formation and its place in the theory of religious education is explored in depth by Graham http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png International Journal of Education and Religion Brill
