Did Al-Manfaluti Really Shed Tears for His Protagonist?

Did Al-Manfaluti Really Shed Tears for His Protagonist? DID AL-MANFALUTI REALLY SHED TEARS FOR HIS PROTAGONIST? BY M. PELED Introduction HE PURPOSE of this article is to examine an episode in the Thistory of Arabic literature, in Egypt of the first two decades of this century, when new genres were being tried by creative writers. This examination would, hopefully, help to better understand that formative period of modern Arabic literature. It was a period of vigorous search for new horizons by the modernists and staunch resistence of the conservatives to far reaching innovations. But in the course of the heated debates between the two tendencies, many inconsistencies were displayed, which reveal the extent of perplex- ity and confusion which had attended the search for new modes of literary writing. The episode to be examined is al-Mazini's article criticizing al- Manfaluti's fiction, published in 1921, in Part One of al-diwdn, the book he had jointly written with Mahmud al-caqqdd. Gibb on al-Manfalu,ta The situation of Arabic literary style at the turn of the century, was discussed by Gibb in his article on «al-Manfaluti and the New Style»,1 written in 1929.
