INTRODUCTION His verse has presented Koran commentators with two main T questions : one concerns the meaning of the term mu§kamlit (translated as «clear [verses] to be understood») and mutashabihat (translated as «parabolical»); the other touches the legitimacy of Koran interpretation. The verse states that muhkamat and mutashiibihiit are two com- ponents of the Koranic text that may be regarded as opposites.
