RAWDAT AL-QUL � B BY AL-ŠAYZAR � A Twelfth Century Book on Love BY DAVID SEMAH AMONG printed Arabic books dealing with the subject of love, Diwan al-Sababa by Ibn Abi Hagala (776 H.j1375 A.D.) is perhaps the earliest to quote from a twelfth century book on love called Rawdat al-Qulüb wa-Nuzhat al-Muhibb wa-l-Mahbub by al- Šayzari (The Garden of Hearts and the Recreation of the Lover and the Beloved, henceforth : Rawdat al-Qulüb) 1. Subsequently there are some quotations from the same book in Tazyin al-Aswdq by Dä'ud al-Antaki (1008 H./1599 A.D.) 2. Strange as it may seem, no mention of Razvdat al-Qulab is made in other printed Arabic books on love, nor in the manuscript of Manazil al-Ahbdb by al-Din Mahmud al-Halabi (725 H.j1325 A.D.), which we had the opportunity to examine 3. Needless to say, it is impossible to determine whether the same can be said about other books which have not appeared in print. Whatever the case, there is solid ground for assuming that Rawdat al-Qulub was not popular with later writers on love 4.
